Lost Icons carved and donated by Doug White.

Lost Icons is a tribute to John A. Ruthven - "I was lucky enough to be asked to display some of my work at John's gallery in Georgetown, Ohio and felt I should do something to honor the passing of such a talented artist and generous conservationist.

I chose to base the work on species that have also passed into history, nearly passed, or are rapidly doing so. The main subject matter is the Passenger Pigeon, which was a favorite subject of John's. It's tale of woe is well known.

The male is carved in American Elm, a former forest and city street icon now decimated by the Dutch Elm Disease. The female is carved in White Ash, now rapidly disappearing thanks to the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. The back plaque is American Chestnut, a once dominant member of the Appalachian forests, which all but disappeared early last century thanks to the introduction of the Chestnut Blight."

Doug White, local sculptor and life-long Cincinnati Nature Center member, salvages wood from demolished buildings, storm-damaged trees, or wood left over from timbering operations. To start a sculpture, he roughs out the shape with power tools, and finishes the work with hand gouges.

Tickets will not be mailed. Your information will be automatically included in the raffle.

All proceeds from the sale of this work go to Cincinnati Nature Center to aid in the continuation of conserving native species.
