"The woods that Mr. Krippendorf lived in are part of a farm in Southern Ohio that once belonged to a country doctor to whom he was sent to spend a summer when recovering from a childhood illness. While he was there he spent the daylight hours in the woods, and promised himself as he walked there alone, that when he grew up he would buy them. He did buy them, and for more than fifty years he worked to make a woodland garden where something would be in bloom every moth of the year. He called it Lob's Wood. For ten years he sent me reports of the wood, and of its flowers and their seasons, and (without knowing it) a portrait of a gardener."
